Local hearsay suggests the Old Fort was once a plantation, supported by maps from 1763. Located on Bequia’s highest point, Mt. Pleasant, the estate offers panoramic views. Discovered in 1978 by Otmar and Sonja Schaedle, it was restored from ruins in the French Colonial style. Director and co-owner Quirin Schaedle emphasizes its historical significance, stating, “I want to go more and more in that direction.”
What drove Otmar Schaedle, a German teacher, to leave his homeland and rebuild an 18th-century plantation on Bequia? His son Quirin reflects on his father’s adventurous spirit and their family’s journey in transforming the ruins into a Caribbean retreat.
Amid Bequia’s development, the Old Fort’s six-bedroom Plantation House preserves the island’s charm, with sprawling orchards and ocean views that rival the best in the region.
The Old Fort is described as a charming conversion from an old French fort, with six rooms offering spectacular views, warm hospitality, and excellent cuisine.
The Old Fort offers breathtaking views of Mustique and the Grenadines. Originally an eccentric retreat, it now features a sophisticated restaurant and the renowned top tower room with one of the Caribbean’s finest views.
